Wild Geese, by Mary Oliver
One of my all time favourite poems. When I read this I feel calm amidst the power of nature she conveys. The world goes on despite my small minded protestations. It helps me gain perspective. I almost feel wind in my hair as I read.
Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting --
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
Visualisation:
Use this visualisation to rejuvenate whenever you’re feeling stuck or stagnant and need a pick me up.
Visualise flying through the sky like a wild goose. loving what you love and leaving your regrets, bad memories, and past troubles behind you. Feel the wind blowing them away as the air lifts you higher. Feel the wind in your hair, the smile on your face, the smell of clear sky, the coolness on your skin. Notice how the wind lifts you and you can swoop and turn at will.
