The Power of Self Awareness on Negative Thoughts
Having therapy through my counselling and psychotherapy trainings taught me something life changing. That I could get caught up in seeing myself and others through a distorted lens without even realising. I experienced a total eclipse of reality in favour of the unhelpful stories my patterned mind liked to come up with. I would then act on those false thoughts, and it began to shape my life. I worked in jobs I hated, hung around with people who weren’t right for me, and pushed my true self away deep down inside. My mood was low and my self doubt was sky high.
Even when it got too much, and I gave up my corporate life to embark on the journey to become a therapist, I doubted myself. I had thoughts like: “But I ‘should’ get a proper job. I will fail. Everyone will hate me for going against the grain, for stepping out of the box. It is my fault I didn’t fit in, and I won’t fit in here either. I never achieve anything. No-one respects me anyway.”
I found it common in my clients too, who also distorted their reality, sometimes because of what happened in the past, or inexplicably giving far too much weight to something of no real consequence. If you are a subscriber to me weekly Letters from Therapy, you may have read Mary’s story.
Mary was a bored, unsatisfied administrator with a secret dream of becoming a teacher. She honestly couldn’t see herself doing it, despite being educated, intelligent and great with kids. We worked together on her unhelpful distorted thinking, which had filtered down into the way she felt about herself. Her deeper negative self image impacted the negative thoughts she wasn’t even aware she was caught up in. She had picked all this up in a difficult childhood. By the end of our work together, she had separated from her unkind boyfriend, and enrolled in a teacher training course in the following September.
